Nigerian songstress Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, known as Ayra Starr, recently shared the origins of her stage name, attributing it partly to her record label head, Don Jazzy.
During a Christmas interview with Arise TV, Ayra explained that “Ayra” stemmed from her desire for the Yoruba name “Ira” to be pronounced as ‘Aira.’ She revealed that it was her way of ensuring the correct pronunciation by spelling it as ‘A Y R A,’ which held personal significance and felt divinely inspired.
Before joining Mavin Records, Ayra was known as “Oyin,” a shortened version of her first name, Oyinkansola. It was Don Jazzy’s suggestion to add the suffix “Starr” to her name, signifying her aspiration to be perceived as woke and open-minded, aiming for honor and respect.
The singer expressed that the name “Ayra” embodies the essence of being awakened and open-minded, aligning with her aspirations and values. This revelation sheds light on the thoughtful process behind her chosen stage identity.
